September is Library Card Sign-Up Month

Posted on August 26, 2019 at 5:09 PM by Sharon Hoggard

This September, Portsmouth Public Library is joining the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide for Library Card Sign-Up Month.  The recognition serves to remind parents, caregivers, and students that obtaining a library card is the first step toward academic achievement and lifelong learning.

A library card opens a world of infinite possibilities through resources and services that give students the tools to succeed in school and beyond. From STREAM (science, technology, reading, engineering, arts, and mathematics) programs, family story times, to crafts, and in-person help, libraries transform lives through education.

Libraries offer free and fun educational resources and activities that bring families and communities together. Portsmouth Public Library offers basic computer classes, book clubs, online resources, paint socials, and much more!  Libraries play an important role in the education and development of young children through early literacy programs such as preschool STEM, story times, and programs for infants and toddlers and you will find all of these in our children’s departments. Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifelong learning.

This year, Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 4” characters Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Bo Peep and friends are going on an adventure as Honorary Chairs of Library Card Sign-Up Month.  In their role, they will promote the value of a library card and bring attention to the many ways libraries transform lives and communities.  Starting in September, our libraries will offer limited edition “Toy Story” library cards while supplies last!

For more information about how to sign up for a library card, please visit a Portsmouth Public Library location; call 393-8501; or, go to https://www.portsmouthpubliclibrary.org.
