THE BUZZ

Volume 6, 22   (Week 38)

September 20, 2007

Mosquito Activity (Scale from 0 to 5)
  • Cool breezy conditions have helped to shut the mosquito activity down quite a bit.
  • Overall mosquito activity remains a 2, the mosquito activity will not fall below a 2 until day time temperatures are consistently below 55 degrees (usually mid December).
Surveillance
  • Again only trace amounts of rain were recoded at a few locations in the city last week.
  • 5 CDC style traps were set this week, with a total of 21 mosquitoes caught for an average of 4 per trap. This represents some of the lowest trap counts recorded in the past few years.
  • 10 Omni-Directional Fay-Prince (OFP) were set this week, with a total of 110 tiger mosquitoes for an average of 11 per trap. Tiger mosquitoes dropped dramatically this week, most likely due to the cool and breezy conditions.

Service Requests
  • We had no service calls this week.
Control Efforts
  • The spray crew concentrating on source reduction efforts, they collected over 100 illegally dumped tires from the Truxton / Highland Biltmore areas of the city this week. The collected tires are split in two and disposed of thus permanently eliminating them as mosquito breeding habitat. The city Vehicle Services, Waste Management, and Sheriff Department handle the tire splitting and disposal efforts.
  • No truck fogging was done this week because of the low trap counts and poor weather conditions.
