THE BUZZ

Volume 6, 7   (Week 23)

June 7, 2007

Mosquito Activity (Scale from 0 to 5)
  • The rain has come and the mosquitoes are not far behind. Our dry conditions have been interrupted by tropical moisture and evening thunder showers. Mosquitoes are actively breeding in most standing water and adult trap counts are expected to increase next week.
Surveillance
  • We are finding all stages of larvae in standing water throughout the city.
  • We conducted normal trapping schedule for this week 5 CDC, 20 OFP.
  • 5 CDC style traps were set this week, with a total of 1,297 mosquitoes caught, for an average of 260 per trap night up from 161 per trap last week. The bulk of the mosquitoes trapped this week were at the Landfill trap; we will monitor these mosquitoes and treat as needed to minimize impacts on the surrounding neighborhoods.
  • 20 Omni-Directional Fay-Prince (OFP), used to trap tiger mosquitoes, caught 121 83 tiger mosquitoes for an average of 6 per trap. This was the first week this year that trap counts went over 10 in Churchland. Figure 1 indicates that tiger mosquito populations are beginning to rapidly increase.

  • Mosquito control staff have worked to treat road side ditches and storm drain catch basins all week.
