THE BUZZ

Volume 5, 22   (Week 36)

September 7, 2006

Mosquito Activity (Scale from 0 to 5)
  • The city received an average of 8.53 inches of rain last week. Mosquito production is expected to increase significantly over the next few weeks as a direct result of the rain.
  • The mosquito activity remains a 2 because of the presence of EEE and West Nile Virus in mosquitoes. The mosquito activity has the potential to increase to a 3 or 4 over the next few weeks regional EEE and West Nile Virus activity is on the rise.
Surveillance
  • 8 CDC style light traps were set this week, a total of 113 mosquitoes were caught, for an average of 14 per trap. Trap counts decreased slightly from last week. Trap counts are forecast to increase over the next few weeks.
  • 7 Gravid style traps were set this week, a total of 54 mosquitoes were caught, for an average of 8 per trap. Gravid trap counts were down 30% from last week.
  • Larval surveillance earlier this week indicated pretty much everything that was wet was actively breeding mosquitoes.
Service Requests
  • We received no complaint calls this week.
Control Efforts
  • Staff have been aggressively treating standing water throughout the city over the past few days.
  • Contract helicopter applicator is tentatively scheduled to treat approximately 100 acres of mosquito breeding habitat next week (weather permitting).
  • Truck fogging for adult mosquitoes will be conducted early next week as needed.
Mosquito Control Facts (Repellant)
Despite all of the control efforts there will be adult mosquitoes. Citizens need to remember to:
  • empty out all standing water around the house (kids toys, bird baths, tires, tarps, swimming pool covers, birdbaths, etc.);
  • wear Long sleeve, loose fitting, light colored clothing;
  • properly use insect repellants approved by the health department and centers for disease control and prevention. Products with DEET, Picaridin, or Lemon Eucalyptus. When using DEET, no more than 50 percent DEET should be used for adults and no more than 30 percent for children under 12. Always follow the instructions when using insect repellents.
