THE BUZZ

Volume 5, 15   (Week 29)

July 20, 2006

Mosquito Activity (Scale from 0 to 5)
  • The city received 1.42 inches of rain last week. Due to the hot temperatures, many of the areas that flooded from the rain are drying up, reducing breeding sources.
  • Mosquito activity remains a 2 for most of the city. The northern and southern edges of the city are still seeing higher mosquito numbers than the city’s interior.
  • Container breeding mosquitoes will continue to be a problem for city residents. We have seen an increase in these types of mosquitoes due to the rain. Please help us by remembering to free you yard of anything that holds water, and to keep your yard clean.
Surveillance
  • 10 CDC style light traps were set this week, a total of 871 mosquitoes were caught, for an average of 87 per trap. Trap counts decreased around 40% from last week.
  • 7 Gravid style traps were set this week, a total of 282 mosquitoes were caught, for an average of 40 per trap. Gravid trap counts fell by 33% from last week.
  • Four mosquito pools were sent off for West Nile Virus testing this week.
Service Requests
  • We received 4 complaint calls this week. These calls consisted mostly of concern for areas flooded with water. Some calls were in reference to container breeding mosquitoes being bad in certain neighborhoods.
Control
  • Crews applied a barrier treatment to the Rotunda/Crystal Lakes area and around the ball fields and Churchland High School. This was to combat the high numbers of mosquitoes caught in the nearby traps from the past two weeks. This treatment should remain effective for a few weeks.
  • Crews are also continuing to treat any remaining standing water, including ditches, storm drains, and catch basins.
  • Truck fogging will be done as mosquito activity and weather conditions permit.
  • Mosquito Spraying information is posted on the Mosquito Spray Hotline at 393-8666.
