THE BUZZ

Volume 5, 9   (Week 23)

June 8, 2006

Mosquito Activity (Scale from 0 to 5)
  • We received an average of .75 inches of rain last week. Frequent rain showers and hot temperatures are the perfect combination for tiger mosquitoes. Citizens need to empty all standing water around your house to limit tiger mosquitoes.
  • Mosquito activity is a 2 for the entire city. There has been no Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) or West Nile Virus (WNV) detected in the area this year.
Surveillance
  • Ten CDC style traps were set this week and a total of 1,711 mosquitoes were caught, with an average of 171 mosquitoes per trap night. This is up slightly from last week.
  • The majority of the increase was at the landfill trap location.
  • Gravid traps will start in two weeks. Gravid traps are the primary tool used to measure the major species of mosquitoes that can carry West Nile Virus.
Service Requests
  • We received no complaint calls about mosquitoes this week.
Control
  • Ditch cleaning operations are underway at the city landfill, first phase cleaning should be completed before mid July and the next aerial larviciding.
  • Crews have also been treating roadside ditches in the city this week.
  • Truck fogging will be conducted this week to knock back some of the adult mosquitoes at the Landfill, Churchland High School, Park Manor and Crystal Lake areas of the city.
  • Information about spray activities is available on the Mosquito Spray Hotline at 393-8666 press 1 when prompted. Please not the spray hotline is a recoded message, to report a complaint you must call 393-8666 and speak with the operator.
