THE BUZZ

Volume 5, 7   (Week 21)

May 25, 2006

Mosquito Activity (Scale from 0 to 5)
  • We received an average of .44 inches of rain last week.
  • Mosquito activity is a 2 for the entire city. There has been no Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) or West Nile Virus (WNV) detected in the area this year.
Surveillance
  • Ten CDC style traps were set this week and a total of 877 mosquitoes were caught, with an average of 88 mosquitoes per trap night. This is down from last week, again the highest trap counts are not around any houses at this time.
  • Most roadside ditches have dried up and are not producing mosquitoes, catch basins and containers are the major mosquito breeders at this time.
Service Requests
  • We received 2 complaint calls about mosquitoes this week.
Control
  • Staff are aggressively treating catch basins starting with down town area. The basins down town will be treated before the holiday weekend.
  • There are no adult mosquito spraying operations scheduled at this time.
Federal Activity
  • The Army Corps of Engineers Craney Island and Navy Fuel Depot mosquito programs are in the full swing.
  • City, Army, and Navy staff regularly communicate by phone and email to coordinate related mosquito control activities. In addition staff meet in the field as needed to jointly monitor control efforts.
  • Summaries of federal activity can be found at the Army Corps web site at http://www.nao.usace.army.mil/redesign/Projects/Craney/Craney%20Mosquito/homepage.asp
