THE BUZZ

Volume 5, 2   (Week 16)

April 20, 2006

Mosquito Activity (Scale from 0 to 5)
  • We received an average of 3 tenths of an inch of rain last week. This was a very small amount of rain and is not expected to increase mosquito populations.
  • Mosquito activity is a 1 for the entire city. Very few adult mosquitoes are around; most activity is juvenile mosquitoes in limited standing water.
Surveillance
  • Eight CDC style traps were set this week and a total of 77 mosquitoes were caught, with an average of 10 mosquitoes per trap night.
  • Back ditches, temporary woodland pools are typical breeding habitats for this time of year. Tires are also starting to breed mosquitoes. These areas are currently being monitored for larval presence and treated as needed.
Service Requests
  • There were no service requests this week. There have only been 6 total requests for service for 2006. Most calls are in regard to standing water or clogged ditches that have potential to breed mosquitoes.
Control
  • Staff is systematically inspecting and treating potential mosquito breeding sites thought the city. Treating of sites includes: source reduction efforts (taking steps to remove the water) and larviciding (treating the water with pesticides to prevent mosquito from successfully breeding).
  • There are no adult mosquito spraying operations scheduled at this time.
Mosquito Control Facts
  • Source Reduction efforts are used when possible to reduce or eliminate the amount of standing water available for mosquito breeding. Citizens must also do their part by dumping out any standing water in their yards each week.
