| Mosquito Activity (Scale from 0 to 5) |
- Dry conditions dominate our region. Many areas normally wet are
completely dry, some of the remaining wet areas will continue to dry
out as trees begin to leaf out over the next two weeks.
- Mosquito activity is a 1 for the entire city. Very few adult
mosquitoes are around; most activity is juvenile mosquitoes in
limited standing water.
|
| Surveillance |
- Areas that historically breed mosquitoes this time of year are
being monitored for larval presence, though wet areas are spotty due
to dry conditions.
- Back ditches, temporary woodland pools are typical breeding
habitats for this time of year. Tires are also starting to breed
mosquitoes.
- Adult mosquito trapping will start next week.
|
| Service Requests |
- Service requests are low, with only one call this week. There
have only been 6 total requests for service for 2006. Most calls are
in regard to standing water or clogged ditches that have potential
to breed mosquitoes.
|
| Control |
- Staff is systematically inspecting and treating potential
mosquito breeding sites thought the city. Treating of sites
includes: source reduction efforts (taking steps to remove the
water) and larviciding (treating the water with pesticides to
prevent mosquito from successfully breeding).
- There are no adult mosquito spraying operations scheduled at
this time.
|
| Federal Activity |
- Source reduction efforts are continuing at Craney Island.
Trapping surveillance activities have begun at Craney Island and at
the Navy Fuel Depot.
- Larvaciding has begun in appropriate areas on Navy Fuel Depot
and Craney Island.
