Mosquito Activity (Scale from 0 to 5)

  • Trap counts are low and complaint calls are down. Mosquito activity is a (2) for this week.
  • The only significant mosquitoes in Portsmouth are Asian Tiger mosquitoes. Citizens must empty all standing water in man-made items (toys, birdbaths, tires, buckets, flowerpots, rain gutters, etc.) to stop the mosquito breeding.

Surveillance

  • 9 CDC style light traps were set this week, a total of 530 mosquitoes were caught, for an average of 59 per trap. Average trap counts are the lowest they have been in the last 18 weeks.
  • 6 Gravid traps were set this week, a total of 328 mosquitoes were caught, for an average of 59 per trap. Gravid trap counts jumped this week, mostly due to one location (Greenland Blvd.).
  • To date no mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile Virus in the City of Portsmouth.

Service Requests

  • We received 4 complaint calls about mosquitoes this week.

Control

  • Crews shifted efforts towards treating storm drains for breeding mosquitoes.
  • Limited truck fogging is scheduled for the rest of this week. Truck spraying information is available on the Mosquito Hotline at 393-8666 press 1 when prompted by the recording.
