Mosquito Activity (Scale from 0 to 5)

  • Rain last week caused the mosquito activity to increase to a (3) this week.
  • Much of the city received close to 3 inches of rain on Tuesday, this should cause mosquito activity to increase again next week.

Surveillance

  • 10 CDC style light traps were set this week, a total of 1,312 mosquitoes were caught, for an average of 132 per trap. Trap counts were up from last week.
  • 6 Gravid traps were set this week, a total of 80 mosquitoes were caught, for an average of 14 per trap. Gravid trap counts dropped back this week.

Service Requests

  • We received 10 complaint calls about mosquitoes this week, many were to report possible mosquito breeding in standing water.

Control

  • Crews are working to treat standing water from the rain on Tuesday.
  • Truck fogging is schedule for many areas in the city to control adult mosquitoes.
  • Mosquito Spraying information is posted on the Mosquito Spray Hotline at 393-8666.

Special Note

  • The Air Force is scheduled to be in town next week to spray for mosquitoes. (Click here for the Air Force's news release in PDF format.)
  • We are closely monitoring the weather, it is possible the weather will prevent or limit what areas are sprayed. Updates for spray activity in Portsmouth will be posted on the spray hotline (393-8666) as soon as the information becomes available.
