Mosquito Activity (Scale from 0 to 5)
- Mosquito activity dropped to a (2) this week.
- Rain last week may cause mosquito activity to increase next week.
Surveillance
- 10 CDC style light traps were set this week, a total of 880
mosquitoes were caught, for an average of 88 per trap. Trap counts were
the lowest they have been in the last 3 months.
- 7 Gravid traps were set this week, a total of 220 mosquitoes were
caught, for an average of 37 per trap. Gravid trap counts were almost
double this week, we are still below the normal gravid trap counts for
this time of year.
Service Requests
- We received 7 complaint calls about mosquitoes this week, many were
to report possible mosquito breeding in standing water.
Control
- Early this week wide spread mosquito breeding was found in standing
water caused by weekend rain. Crews worked very hard this week to treat
the standing water in the city.
- Limited truck fogging has been conducted to further suppressing
mosquito populations.
- Mosquito Spraying information is posted on the Mosquito Spray
Hotline at 393-8666.
Mosquito Response Plan In Action
- In response to the two positive mosquito pools collected July 19th
(Week 29) trapped in the Lake Forest section of the city, city and
health department staff took the following actions.
Week 29
- Mosquito control began spraying the entire city due to elevated
mosquito trap counts before the test results came back from the lab. The
entire city was sprayed July 19 - 22.
Week 30
- Positive test results confirmed and released to the public Monday
July 25th.
- Follow up traps collected on Tuesday July 26th showed marked decline
in mosquito counts. (City staff did not catch enough mosquitoes to send
for testing.)
Week 31
- Trap counts from August 2nd show mosquito populations are lower than
they have been in the past 3 months.
- Health Department staff went door to door distributing mosquito
prevention materials to residents near the mosquito trap site where the
positive mosquitoes were collected.
