Mosquito Activity (Scale from 0 to 5)

  • Mosquito activity has increased slightly this week. Activity is a 3 due to rain last week.
  • Hot temperatures and rain are causing asian tiger mosquitoes to flare up. Citizens must empty all water around the house each week to prevent asian tiger mosquitoes from becoming a problem.

Surveillance

  • 10 CDC style light traps were set this week, a total of 2,915 mosquitoes were caught, for an average of 292 per trap. Trap counts were up slightly this week compared to last week.
  • 7 Gravid traps were set this week, a total of 191 mosquitoes were caught, for an average of 28 per trap. Gravid trap totals increased slightly from last week.
  • Mosquito samples are being submitted for virus testing. To date Portsmouth has not had any samples test positive for West Nile Virus (WNV) or Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE).

Service Requests

  • Complaint calls have increased this week most likely due to the media coverage of mosquitoes. We had 12 calls this week.

Control

  • Control efforts have been stepped up due to the EEE activity in the region. Efforts are focusing on treating standing water and spraying for adult mosquitoes when needed.
  • Most of the city has been sprayed for adult mosquitoes, weather permitting we will complete spraying the city Friday evening.
  • Mosquito Spraying information is posted on the Mosquito Spray Hotline at 393-8666.

Special Note

  • Portsmouth Mosquito Control will be at the open house at Hoffler’s Creek Wildlife Preserve on Sat. July 30 from 11 AM to 3 PM. We will be distributing information on mosquito control, West Nile Virus, and the general precautions citizens can take to help limit their exposure to mosquitoes. We hope to see you there.

Federal Activity

  • Conditions on Craney Island are better than they have been in years.
  • Corps staff continue to eliminate areas holding water through grading and ditching efforts.
  • Contractors are treating standing water as directed on both Craney Island and Navy Fuel Depot properties.
  • For more information on Corps mosquito activities on Craney Island visit their site at www.nao.usace.army.mil/Projects/Craney/craney.asp
