Mosquito Activity (Scale from 0 to 5)

  • Dry conditions have helped to drastically decrease mosquito activity, city wide activity is between a 1 and 2.

Surveillance

  • 11 CDC style light traps were set this week, a total of 1,740 mosquitoes were caught, for an average of 159 per trap. The average number of mosquitoes per trap night was drastically lower this week.
  • 8 Gravid traps were this week, a total of 67 mosquitoes were caught, for an average of 9 per trap. Gravid traps were also lower this week.
  • Larval activity is limited to containers and some back ditches.

Service Requests

  • We received 6 complaint calls about mosquitoes.

Control

  • Crews have completed treating back ditches in the city. Efforts are shifting to removing ditch blockages and monitoring treatment effectiveness.
  • Very limited truck fogging will be conducted as needed.
  • Mosquito Spraying information is posted on the Mosquito Spray Hotline at 393-8666.

Federal Activity

  • The Army Corps of Engineers Craney Island has awarded an aerial spray contract to Summit Helicopters, Inc. from Cloverdale, VA.
  • This week Corps and City staff identified areas breeding mosquitoes at the city landfill. Dense vegetation lining ditches is severely limiting our treatment options. Current treatment options in use include: ditch cleaning, stocking mosquito eating fish, and using extended residual larvicide products.
  • City, Corps, and Navy staffs are jointly finding ways to improve what we are doing. Future plans include controlling the vegetation and experimenting with different pesticide formulations and application techniques.
