Mosquito Activity (Scale from 0 to 5)
- Rain and hot temperatures means mosquitoes. The mosquito season is
at full stride. Residents must be vigilant dumping out standing water on
their properties each week.
- Mosquito activity is a 2 for most of the city. Some areas have
elevated mosquito activity caused by mosquitoes that breed in
containers. The problem areas of Cradock, Rotunda, and the Portsmouth
Landfill saw some improve this week.
- Weather conditions continue to hamper our ability to effectively
treat areas. City staff continue working overtime to treat as many areas
as possible.
Surveillance
- 12 CDC style light traps were set this week, a total of 4,093
mosquitoes were caught, for an average of 341 per trap. Average trap
counts were up down slightly this week. Trap counts could increase
substantially first of next week due to the frequent rain.
- Gravid traps were set late this week and the data are not available
at this time.
Service Requests
- We received 8 complaint calls this week about mosquitoes. Complaints
are about the same as last week.
Control
- Adult spray operations are scheduled for most of the city. Crews
will treat as much as we can each day. Mosquito Truck Fogging can only
be conducted when winds are less than 10 miles per hour and there is no
rain.
- Mosquito Spraying information is posted on the Mosquito Spray
Hotline at 393-8666.
Federal Activity
- Navy and Army mosquito project managers conducted some joint larval
mosquito surveillance this week. This was part of the ongoing efforts to
locate and treat mosquito breeding habitats.
