Mosquito Activity (Scale from 0 to 5)
- Mosquito activity is a 1 for most of the city. There are still some
localized areas with increased activity (2), mostly wooded areas around
Rotunda Blvd, Craddock, and North Churchland.
- Overall mosquito activity did increase slightly from the rain last
week, most of the increased activity was limited to the city landfill,
away from populated areas.
Surveillance
- Eleven CDC style light traps were set this week, a total of 1,754
mosquitoes were caught this week, up slightly for 1,391 last week. The
average number of mosquitoes per trap was 159, again this was up
slightly from 117 last week. The average number mosquitoes caught per
trap was slightly skewed due to localized hot spots of activity. For
most of the city conditions are improving and there are very few
mosquitoes around.
Service Requests
- We received 2 complaint calls this week about mosquitoes. Complaint
calls were minimal this week most likely due to the poor weather
conditions and low mosquito activity in populated areas.
Control
- Staff continues to systematically inspect and treat potential
mosquito breeding sites thought the city. Efforts this week have focused
on treating roadside ditches.
- We were only able to spray one time in the last two weeks due to
poor weather conditions. Mosquito Truck Fogging can only be conducted
when winds are less than 10 miles per hour and there is no rain.
- Limited truck fogging is scheduled for late this week along wooded
areas with the highest trap counts as weather conditions permit.
- Mosquito Spraying information is posted on the Mosquito Spray
Hotline at 393-8666.
Federal Activity
- The City of Portsmouth, Army Corps of Engineers, and Navy are
coordinating mosquito activities for mutual benefit. Staffs are working
together to find and treat mosquito-breeding habitats.
