Mosquito Activity (Scale from 0 to 5)

  • Mosquito activity is a 1 for most of the city. Wooded areas around Rotunda have slightly higher activity at a 2.

Surveillance

  • Eight CDC style light traps were set this week, a total of 316 mosquitoes were caught. The average number of mosquitoes per trap was only 40; this is slightly higher than 6.5 last week (see attached map).
  • Overall the city is dryer than normal; this has allowed the city to concentrate efforts on problem-wet areas.

Service Requests

  • We have only received one complaint this week.

Control

  • Staff is systematically inspecting and treating potential mosquito breeding sites thought the city. Current efforts are focusing on treating problem-wet areas with 150-day residual product; this should control mosquitoes all season long.
  • There are no adult mosquito spraying operations scheduled at this time. Adult spraying operations are projected to start next week if needed.

Mosquito Control Facts

  • Source Reduction efforts are used when possible to reduce or eliminate the amount of standing water available for mosquito breeding. Citizens must also do their part by dumping out any standing water in their yards each week.
  • Don’t forget to clean out the rain gutters.

Federal Activity

  • The Navy and Army Corps of Engineers made a short presentation outlining the mosquito control program enhancements made this winter. Over 70 citizens attended the meeting.
