UNIFORM PATROL

Uniform Patrol officers are responsible for patrolling the city 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There are three platoons that work the three basic shifts and each is broken down into three groups. There is also a group of officers that work Wednesday through Saturday evenings specifically. The city is divided into two sides, Northside and Southside, and each is divided into zones that the officers are assigned to with relative consistency that affords officers the chance to learn the people and problems in their zones.

Of the 250 sworn members of the Portsmouth Police Department, 106 are assigned to Uniform Patrol, which is comprised of:

  • 4 Lieutenants - 1 Patrol Operations Administrator, 3 Patrol Commanders

  • 10 Sergeants

  • 92 Officers

Uniform Patrol is the backbone of any law enforcement agency and its sworn members are the "jack of all trades." Being the development grounds for the department all sworn personnel start off assigned to Uniform Patrol and as openings occur in other areas they are generally filled from this Division.
