POLICE TRAININGThe Portsmouth Police Training Unit is dedicated to developing the skills, knowledge and service delivery of sworn and civilian employees.  We will provide comprehensive training to ensure our citizens are provided quality, public safety services while being treated with professionalism, dignity and respect. 

The Portsmouth Police Training Unit is dedicated to developing the skills, knowledge and service delivery of sworn and civilian employees.  We will provide comprehensive training to ensure our citizens are provided quality, public safety services while being treated with professionalism, dignity and respect. 

The Portsmouth Police Department Training Unit provides continuous training for all employees.  The training includes but is not limited to; firearms training, defensive tactics training, legal updates, Range 2000 training (shoot/ don't shoot scenario training), along with a variety of training to address the ever changing trends in Law Enforcement.

Police Training is also responsible for recruitment of new officers and conducts the background investigations and polygraph examinations of police applicants.

The Portsmouth Police Department Training Unit provides continuous training for all employees.  The training includes but is not limited to; firearms training, defensive tactics training, legal updates, Range 2000 training (shoot/ don't shoot scenario training), along with a variety of training to address the ever changing trends in Law Enforcement.The Training Unit also provides opportunities for our citizen to become familiar with the day-to-day operations of the Police Department.  The Training Unit accomplishes this task through our Citizens Academy and our Teen Citizens Academy.  Students are exposed to the many different units throughout the department and their functions.  Students are also given the opportunity to ride the street with a beat officer to see what it feels like to respond to a call for service.  Click on the banners below for more information on these opportunities.
