POLICE TRAINING
The Portsmouth Police Training Unit is dedicated to
developing the skills, knowledge and service delivery of sworn and civilian
employees. We will provide comprehensive training to ensure our citizens
are provided quality, public safety services while being treated with
professionalism, dignity and respect. The Portsmouth Police Department Training Unit
provides continuous training for all employees. The training includes but is
not limited to; firearms training, defensive tactics training, legal updates,
Range 2000 training (shoot/ don't shoot scenario training), along with a variety
of training to address the ever changing trends in Law Enforcement.
Police Training is also responsible for recruitment of new
officers and conducts the background investigations and
polygraph examinations of police applicants.
The Training Unit also provides opportunities for our
citizen to become familiar with the day-to-day operations of the Police Department. The Training
Unit accomplishes this task through our Citizens Academy
and our Teen Citizens Academy. Students are
exposed to the many different units throughout the
department and their functions. Students are also
given the opportunity to ride the street with a beat
officer to see what it feels like to respond to a call
for service. Click on the banners below for more
information on these opportunities.
