HOMICIDE / ROBBERY UNIT
The homicide/robbery unit is responsible for the investigation of all deaths, to
include homicide, suicide, natural and suspicious deaths, all felony assaults,
all robberies, to include commercial and individual, along with home invasions
and all weapon law violations.
Along with these crimes, the unit also investigates all police involved
shootings and allegations toward officers accused of possible criminal conduct.
The unit is also called upon for special investigations, when required. The
homicide unit consists of five investigators and the robbery unit consists of
four investigators, coming under the command of Sgt. S. Goldman.
Investigators are responsible for thorough investigations, beginning with taking
charge of crime scenes, locating and interviewing all witnesses, victims, and
suspects. Investigators coordinate their investigations with responding uniform
patrol officers, forensic specialists, any applicable law enforcement agencies,
the Commonwealth Attorney office, defense attorneys, and are responsible for,
and prepare, extensive case files for prosecution. On any death investigation,
investigators are responsible for identifying and notifying next of kin and
assisting family members with immediate needs. Investigators are required to
travel, at times, for interviews, interrogations and extraditions.
The homicide/robbery unit is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They are
responsible to respond to any crime scene, within 1 hour after contact. Upon
arrival at crime scenes, the investigator assumes command of the scene and
maintains scenes until completion of their investigation and then releases
scenes appropriately. These investigators have been highly trained and perform
their duties, which at times could include working around the clock, to insure
proper and thorough investigations that lead to the prosecutions of offenders.
