2008 application and testing dates:

Test # 1 - Saturday January 19, 2008

Application Dates: February 19, 2008* - March 14, 2008
Due to the observed hoilday for President's Day on Monday, February 18, 2008, the application process will not begin until Tuesday.
Test # 2 - Saturday, April 12, 2008

Application Dates: June 2, 2008 - June 27, 2008
Test # 3 - Saturday , July 26, 2008

Application Dates: August 4, 2008 - August 29, 2008
Test # 4 - Saturday, September 27, 2008

Testing time is 8:00AM.

Location will be at the Portsmouth Department of Social Services Building, 1701 High Street, Portsmouth, VA.

As a Portsmouth police officer you will have the opportunity to work in a family oriented environment, and experience a well-rounded and fulfilling career in law enforcement. A career with the Portsmouth Police Department offers a secure position with the opportunity to further your education, obtain specialized training in various aspects of law enforcement, and to participate in a promotional process that offers advancement to the highest levels of the department. Under the Virginia Retirement System, you can retire at the age of 50 with 25 years of service.

As a police officer in the city of Portsmouth, you will have the opportunity to perform a wide variety of law enforcement duties. You will be expected to answer any calls for service in your assigned beat, as well as assist other officers. You will perform all types of traffic and drug law enforcement, and be an integral part in a variety of basic investigations.

Advancement

The Portsmouth police department offers a wide variety of specialized units to serve in. These include, Tactical Response Unit (SWAT), Special Investigations (Narcotics), Mounted Patrol, K-9, Strategic Traffic Unit, Community Policing (NEAT) and the Criminal Investigations Bureau.The Portsmouth police department offers a wide variety of specialized units to serve in. All officers must complete their initial one year probation period to be eligible for transfer to one of these specialized units.

Promotion to the rank of Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, and above is made on the basis of a competitive examination process. To be eligible to participate in the promotional process you must have two years of service with the department.
