The
Portsmouth police department is a progressive organization, compromised of

As a police officer in the city of Portsmouth, you will have the opportunity to
perform a wide variety of law enforcement duties. You will be expected to answer
any calls for service in your assigned beat, as well as assist other officers.
You will perform all types of traffic and drug law enforcement, and be an
integral part in a variety of basic investigations.

Advancement
The
Portsmouth police department offers a wide variety of specialized units to serve
in. These include, Tactical Response Unit (SWAT), Special Investigations
(Narcotics), Mounted Patrol, K-9, Strategic Traffic Unit, Community Policing
(NEAT) and the Criminal Investigations Bureau.
All officers must complete their initial one year probation period to be eligible
for transfer to one of these specialized units.
Promotion to the rank of Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, and above is made on the
basis of a competitive examination process. To be eligible to participate in the
promotional process you must have two years of service with the department.
