The police records unit is responsible for the maintenance and storage of police department documentation to include local criminal records, offense and accident reports and felony case files. Police records personnel perform data entry functions for the Portsmouth Police agency. The records unit also takes police reports on “non felony” offenses, by telephone and in person when citizens respond to police headquarters to make a report.

This unit responds to public requests for copies of police reports, criminal records, fingerprinting services and Freedom of Information Act requests.  State wide criminal history checks must be completed through the Virginia State Police.

Parking ticket payments and appeal notices are also handled through this unit. You may pay a parking ticket through the mail or in person.  Appeals must be made in person at the Records Unit and you must have a photo ID when you file your appeal.

The Unit is responsible for the operation of our agency's Virginia Criminal Information Network and National Criminal Information Center (VCIN/NCIC) systems and all data entry input for that system as well as the PISTOL police reporting system, including offense and motor vehicle accident reports.

All vehicles towed within the City of Portsmouth are logged and subsequently entered into the VCIN system by this unit.

The Portsmouth Police Department complies with the set retention and disposal schedules of the Library of Virginia.  The Library of Virginia retention schedule for law enforcement records can be viewed at http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwedo/records/sched_local/index.htm.
