K-9 UNIT
The Portsmouth Police K-9 Unit is very
versatile part of the Police Department with a variety of
different functions and tasks, including being part of the SWAT
team. K-9 Teams routinely backup Uniform Patrol officers on
calls as well as responding to all burglar alarms, robbery
alarms, in-progress calls such as burglaries, robberies, rapes,
assaults, armed subjects, fights, disorderly crowds etc.
The unit routinely assists the Narcotics and Tactical Response
Units as well as assisting the Community Policing Unit with
special operations and Citizen’s Demonstrations or displays at
various functions such as Career Days at various schools.
The K-9 Teams respond to any and all calls that already are, or
have the potential to become very volatile or serious in nature.
The dogs are also used in the schools to scan lockers and
vehicles for narcotics and guns.
The K-9 teams are trained by Sgt. Humphries, a master trainer
with Virginia Police Work Dog Association.
Most of the utilization of the dogs, involves their superior
senses, particularly their olfactory (smell) system. The K-9
teams are trained in a variety of functions such as:

The K-9 Unit utilizes mostly imported dogs.
The Unit consists of Shepherds (Belgian and German), Malinois
and Black Labradors.
