Because of its 250-year history, Portsmouth is filled with historic churches. For a special treat, arrange for a guided tour of a historic Olde Towne church. The oldest church in Portsmouth, Trinity Episcopal Church, was built in 1762. Though very simple in style, it has an asymmetrical tower and classical details. The oldest African-American church in the city is Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. This brick structure, built in 1857, still contains the original wrought-iron rail and hard wooden pews that were made by the hands by a congregation that consisted largely of slaves and freed blacks. St. Paul’s Catholic Church is a Greek Revival church made of granite. This church is on an east-west axis, consistent with church architecture from the Gothic period in Europe.
