The Department of Parks, Recreation, &
Leisure Services offers a variety of recreation programs and
leisure opportunities for citizens of all ages with various
disabilities. To obtain further information about programs,
requirements, and/or registration, contact Michael Kernan, CTRS
at 393-8584.
Learning Through Leisure
This program is designed to offer adults in the community the
opportunity to develop and strengthen social, educational, &
life skills. Target Population: Adults with
developmental disabilities between the ages of 21-40.
Day Mondays Time 10:30 am –
12:30 pm Ages 21-40 Location

Visually Impaired Program (V.I.P.)
This adult support group meets weekly and participates in a
variety of activities such as bowling, arts & crafts,
informative speakers, nursing home visits, and road trips. You
must be legally blind to join. Pre-registration is required.
Day Tuesdays Time 10:00 am –

Crafty Creations
This program is designed to offer adults an opportunity to
express themselves socially and creatively while participating
in arts and crafts projects. Maximum registration of 20
participants. Target Population: Adults over
the age of 21 with developmental disabilities

Our Hours
This program is designed to offer children and young adults the
opportunity to develop and strengthen both social and
educational skills through socialization with peers and leisure
awareness. Maximum number of registrants is 10. Call 393-8584
for further details. Target Population: School-aged children and
young adults with developmental disabilities between the ages of
10-21. Target Population: Children and young
adults with developmental disabilities between the ages of 6-21.
Participants must be enrolled in school.

Basketball
Hoop it up with Portsmouth Special Olympics! Whether you prefer
the individual skills program or team competitions, Special
Olympics has a sports training program to meet your needs.
Target Population: Individuals ages 8 and up
with developmental disabilities.
Day Saturday (beginning December 5th – March)

Special Events:
Back to School Bar-B-Q
Join us for a night of food, friends, and fun! Burgers, hot
dogs, and drinks will be provided. All who attend are asked to
provide a side dish. RSVP at 393-8584 by Friday, Sept. 11th, if
you plan to attend.

Monster Mash Bash
Join us for an evening of “spooktacular” games and treats. Light
refreshments will be served. Please call 393-8584 if you plan to
attend. Wear your best costume…… prizes will be awarded to the
Top 3 in our Costume Contest.

Grand Illumination & Parade
Join us for a fun-filled evening packed with holiday cheer.
Participants will take the Elizabeth River Ferry to Norfolk to
witness the Grand Illumination of Olde Towne Portsmouth and
Downtown Norfolk. We will return after the completion of the
parade. Bring comfortable shoes and dress warmly. Please call

Holiday Dinner & Dance
An evening of dinner and dancing co-sponsored by Special
Olympics – Portsmouth to commemorate the holiday season. Please
