SummerYouth Basketball League (PYBL)
Team registrations will be held June 11-29 for boys and girls ages 9-18. League play will begin. Coaches meeting will be held on July 2, in the 3rd floor conference room at Portsmouth City Hall, 801 Crawford Street.

Optima Fall Girls Basketball LeagueOptima Fall Girls Basketball League
Each year we have a Girl’s Basketball League sponsored by Optima Family Service. The league consists of girls ages 12-14. Players receive information prior to each game on health, family and safety issues. Participating cities are Norfolk, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Hampton, Virginia Beach, Newport News and Portsmouth. This year’s game will be held at Cradock Recreation Center, 4300 George Washington Highway. Tryouts are held each June. For more information, please call 393-8481 x 4116.


Portsmouth Youth Track Club
An on-going FREE Program for youth ages 6-17 in track and field events. Please contact Alex Jones at 466-1088 for details


Hershey Track and Field Program
The annual event is to discover talented youth in track and field events. Advance registration required. The event is scheduled for May 12. Call 558-2804, for more information.


NYSCA Clinics
NYSCA clinics will be offered to all first year coaches who are interested in coaching youth sports. For more information call 393-8481 ext. 4116.


Urban Dance Group
Girls and boys will learn to coordinate dance steps to contemporary hip hop music.

Connect with Conduct—‘A Connection That Works’
The Saturday Academy for Positive Self Development, in conjunction with the Department of Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services, offers a 6-week program focusing on academic achievement, behavioral stabilization, improving discipline problems at home and school, social and emotional development, crime prevention and interaction with authority. Parents are REQUIRED to participate along with their 10-17 year children. Winter session will begin February 3 at Cradock Recreation Center. Sessions are held from 11 am – 12:30 pm weekly. KIDS CAFÉ - After school program where food, fun & learning meet in your neighborhood! The City of Portsmouth Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services and the FoodBank of Southeastern Virginia operate Kids Cafés at the following locations Mondays – Fridays. Pre-registration is required, although the program is free.

T.O.P. The T.O.P. Program stands for Teen Outreach Program. This is a special program designed for teenagers ages 13 to 18 that discuss topics faced during daily activities. The program will include an introduction to pregnancy prevention, STD’s, peer relations and other needed skills. This program is offered on Tuesday from 5:00 pm until 6:00 pm.

Peer Mediation and Conflict Resolution Program. The Peer Mediation and Conflict Resolution Program is a special program designed to teach Portsmouth’s Teens how to deal with conflicts in a peaceful and productive way. Anger management is among the topics that will be discussed. The program is designed for teenagers ages 13 to 18 and takes place on Thursdays from 4:30 pm until 6:30 pm.

Playstation Wednesdays. Playstation Wednesdays is a time setup for the teenagers of Portsmouth to enjoy a couple of hours of friendly inter-city video game competition. Various video game consoles and video games will be available for teens to come and play every Wednesday from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

Movie/Fun Night: This night is set aside for entertaining and relaxing events. This will include road trips, parties, and other fun activities.

SOL Tutoring—Tutoring will be offered in SOL related subjects for those students having difficultities. The tutoring is free to the general public.

Dance Classes—Dance Classes will be offered free of charge to all teens 17 and under. The classes will include a variety of styles and an end-of-the-year performance for the youth and parents enjoyment.
