Portsmouth Community Foundation’s Pennies for Pokey campaign
with schools in the City had outstanding participation.
Staff and volunteers are still counting money collected in
classrooms in train banks donated by Chesapeake Homes New
Port at Victory. The Foundation wanted this to be a
community campaign, and that it is!
The not so surprising part was that the trains were filled
with not just pennies, but nickels, dimes, quarters, bills,
and sometimes checks. Each elementary school classroom bank
has to be counted and recorded. The middle and high school
collections are counted by school. The elementary classroom
at each school collecting the most money will receive passes
to ride the new train at City Park. The middle school, high
school, and elementary school raising the most money will be
recognized at the City Park train station when the new train
is put on the track. Schools are anxiously waiting to learn
of the winner.
The Foundation says that now that the children have shown
their desire for a new train at City Park, it’s time for the
next phase of the campaign. In Phase II businesses will be
asked to participate. Five different containers are
available for collecting money, and businesses are
encouraged to call the Foundation to have one delivered to
their site or one can be picked up at the Foundation office.
As the volunteers collected the banks the last week of
November, many school employees were excited about bringing
back a train at City Park and relayed how excited the
children were to participate. Fond memories of riding the
train and children and grandchildren riding the train were
told with enthusiasm and warm hearts.
Donations can be made at any Portsmouth TowneBank location
(just tell the teller that it’s for the Pokey Smokey Fund),
at City Park on Saturdays, and at the Foundation office at
360 Crawford Street. A donation of $100 will receive
recognition on a railroad tie. Gifts of $5,000, $10,000, and
$25,000 also receive recognition.
So, community, get on board! Let’s bring back a train to
Portsmouth City Park. For more information call
757-397-5424.

Neighborhood Beautification Program
The Portsmouth Neighborhood Beautification Program creates a
partnership between participating neighborhoods and the City. It
serves to benefit both the City and the neighborhood by providing
a means for neighborhood entrances and green spaces to be
maintained attractively, in an efficient, cost effective manner.
The program is based upon a formal contractual agreement between
the City and neighborhood groups. The objectives of the program
are to improve the appearance of public neighborhood green space
and create neighborhood stewardship of the area, while fostering a
sense of unity between the City and the neighborhood.
To learn more about this program, contact the Parks Division for a
copy of our brochure titled “Neighborhood Beautification Program”
at 757-393-8085.
We invite you to contribute to “The Commemorative Tree Planting
Program”. The “Hands Committee” of the Portsmouth Area Council of
Garden Clubs, in cooperation with the Parks Division accepts
donations for the planting of trees commemorating an event, person
or organization. Trees will be used on City property to replace
dying trees, to add new trees and to beautify park, median, and
public areas. The minimum donation is sixty dollars ($60 per
tree).
To insure a harmonious landscape scheme and the proper environment
for your tree, the Parks Division will make the selection of the
species and location for the tree.
Contact the Parks Division for your Commemorative Tree Planting
donation information form. Please mail this form with your check
made payable to the Portsmouth Area Council of Garden Clubs c/o
Mrs. Byron T. Eberly, 301 Park Road, Portsmouth VA 23707.
