The 6 Pillars of Character which provide a common language of character education are:

TRUSTWORTHINESS
FAIRNESS
RESPECT CARING
RESPONSIBILITY
CITIZENSHIP

“Character Education is, first and foremost, an obligation of families and faith communities, but school and youth-service organizations also have a responsibility to help develop the character of young people.”
Excerpt from Aspen Declaration

Character Counts! is being implemented through a partnership of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services and 4-H Youth Development. It provides practical ground rules for everyday living and decision-making. It teaches by example thus creating a positive learning environment. Character Counts! provides a common language’ of character education to use and model. Portsmouth uses Character Counts! as a fundamental building block in all recreation programming and communication with participants, parents and staff.

As we spring into a new year, we look forward, with anticipation, to serving the citizens of Portsmouth with attractive park amenities and recreational programs to enjoy.

This past year was a very exciting one for the Department of Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services, having been recognized with two prestigious awards. The new Fort Nelson Park (Effingham and Crawford Streets) was selected as the “Best New Parks & Recreation Facility” in the state by the Virginia Recreation and Parks Society. In addition the Olde Towne Holiday Music Festival was named one of the “Top 100 Events in North America” by the American Bus Association, a tourism organization, which recognizes events worthy of attendance by tourists.

We hope 2008 holds just as much excitement! So, whatever your favorite activity, join in and ride the wave of excitement in Parks and Recreation. Experience “Recreation for Generations”!
