Portsmouth, Virginia... The right place, the right time
"Character
Counts!" in Portsmouth
“Character Education is, first and foremost,
an obligation of families and faith communities, but school and
youth-service organizations also have a responsibility to help
develop the character of young people.”
Excerpt from Aspen Declaration
Character Counts! is being implemented through a partnership of
the Department of Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services and 4-H
Youth Development. It provides practical ground rules for
everyday living and decision-making. It teaches by example thus
creating a positive learning environment. Character Counts!
provides a common language’ of character education to use and
model. Portsmouth uses Character Counts! as a fundamental
building block in all recreation programming and communication
with participants, parents and staff.

As
Fall comes upon us there are a variety of recreational programs
available for your enjoyment. We hope will take part and enjoy
your favorite activity. The City has many youth sports
organizations offering football, cheerleading, baseball,
softball, soccer and basketball. Or perhaps a festival is more
your choice. The annual UMOJA Festival takes place September
18-20 at n’Telos Wireless Pavilion and features Jagged Edge and
Heads of State (Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill & Ralph Tresvant). The
Olde Towne Holiday Music Festival takes place on December 12 on
the streets of downtown Portsmouth and offers Holiday Music for
everyone to enjoy. The “6 To Six” before and after school
program has been a huge hit for working families. It is
available at City elementary schools, starting in September and
running throughout the school year. Visit one of our many parks
and make a fun filled day of it. Portsmouth City Park has long
been cherished as a place to gather and enjoy a round of golf, a
picnic or water activities. Whatever your interest, please join
in and share the experience of “Recreation for Generations”.
