Portsmouth Announces New Director of Libraries
Portsmouth, VA -- City Manager Kenneth L. Chandler has announced the selection of Todd D. Elliott as the Director of Libraries. Elliott, currently the Branch Manager of the Churchland Library, has been promoted to the Director position. He will head the department as the current Director, Sue Burton, retires after 39 years with Portsmouth Public Libraries.
“I am delighted with the selection of Todd Elliott. The library staff has enjoyed working with him for the last two years and they are excited to be moving forward with his leadership,” said Sue Burton.
Elliott joined Portsmouth Public Libraries in November of 2007 as the Assistant Director. In his position he directed the operations of the branches and provided assistance to the Director in strategic planning, directing, coordinating and implementing library work and services. He also assessed the library services and analyzed data to ensure that the needs and expectations of Portsmouth residents and customers were being met.
Currently as the Churchland Branch Manager, Elliott handles the programmatic operations as well as the building operations for the location. In addition, he manages staff and circulation and serves on the management team.
From 1993 to 1998, Elliott served as a Library Associate at the Richland County Public Library in Columbia, SC and in 1998 they awarded him a graduate assistantship. He began his professional career with the Norfolk Public Library System as a Youth and Bookmobile Librarian prior to becoming the Park Place Branch Manager.
Elliott was employed as a Reference Librarian for Tidewater Community College (TCC). From 2002 until 2005 he worked at the Norfolk campus branch and from 2005 until 2007, he worked at the TCC branch in Virginia Beach. Of his duties in Norfolk, he co-managed the library with oversight of public services. In Virginia Beach, he headed circulation and served on several college governance committees.
A Portsmouth native, Elliott is a 1983 Woodrow Wilson High School graduate. In 1996 he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of South Carolina where he continued his graduate studies and in 1998 received his Master of Library Science degree. He is currently enrolled in the School of Public Administration at Old Dominion University.
Of his professional affiliations, Elliott is a member of the American Library Association and the Virginia Library Association. He and his wife Jackie are the parents of Daryll, 24; Chris, 18; Gigi, 14; and Kiki, 11. They are active members of Point Harbor Community Church.
