Portsmouth, VA (June 15, 2009) -- As the result of a partnership with the City of Portsmouth, the West Park View Community League will unveil a new sculpture in Owens Creek Park on Peninsula Avenue on June 20th at 10 a.m. The sculpture was created by acclaimed Portsmouth artist, Sue Landerman.
The sculpture project, which was funded with a $10,000 grant award from the Portsmouth Neighborhood Matching Fund Program, included the repair and reconstruction of a sidewalk along Peninsula Avenue between McDaniel and Barron Streets. In addition to providing a $2,500 grant match, citizens of the West Park View Community League designed and prepared the site and planted the native grasses and flowering plants that will enhance the sculpture.
“Residents of West Park View and members of the city staff have worked together to bring this project to fruition. This is a successful example of how citizens can partner with their cities while helping to improve their quality of life,” said Stephenie Love, Park Committee Chair.
Staff of the city’s Engineering Division and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services provided assistance with this project. The West Park View Community League was responsible for submitting the grant proposal and procuring artisan supporters including architects, masons, and structural engineers.
