Job Description:
The City of Portsmouth is seeking an experienced risk management professional to oversee the City's risk programs. Specific responsibilities include assessing the risk environment, developing and implementing strategies to reduce exposures, administration of insurance and self-insurance programs, safety and claims management for property, automobile liability, general liability and workers compensation exposures. Also responsible for managing contracts for the Third Party Administrator for worker compensation claims as well as outside medical services providers. Requires comprehensive knowledge of risk management, safety and loss control principles and techniques, statistical methods of analyzing loss data, workers compensation laws and claim settlement procedures. The employee will serve as in-house consultant to all City and City School departments for matters pertaining to risk management, claims management and related fields; audit all bills submitted by claimants, attorneys, third party administrators and medical providers; analyze claims data to determine frequency and severity to identify trends and potential risks; and conduct formal investigations of claims and lawsuits to determine liability. Successful candidates should possess initiative, flexibility, leadership, strong verbal and written communication skills, and effective decision-making, analytical and time management skills. Must possess ability to motivate and coach staff.
Education/Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with 3 to 5 years of related experience, preferably in a local governmental setting; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Professional designation as an Certified Risk Manager (CRM), Associate in Risk Management (ARM) or Associate In Claims (AIC) is preferred.
