Description:
A progressive city government is seeking an innovative, dynamic and forward thinking leader in the role of Director of Economic Development.
As Director, the candidate will serve under the general direction of the City Manager and provide high-level managerial leadership, administrative and financial direction, as well as plan, direct and coordinate economic development for the City of Portsmouth. This position develops, plans organizes and implements marketing strategies to encourage new business and industries to locate in the City of Portsmouth. Promotes attributes of the area and business and industrial development through personal contacts with community leaders, management officials of existing business and industry, industrial real estate community, area and state agencies, etc. Work also involves directing and approving the administrative support activities of the Portsmouth Economic Development Authority and Portsmouth Port and Industrial Commission. Must have a strong background in business expansion and retention development. Prepares, plans and coordinates marketing and advertising activities and approves proposals and recommendations. Markets the City to foster good public relations as well as other projects that provide exposure to the City's special projects, new initiatives and routine services. Prepares, presents and administers budget for the Department and oversees budget expenditures.

Education/Experience:
Requires an excellent communicator, effective decision maker, strategic thinker, and the ability to effect change and provide direction in program planning, development, and implementation, and must have demonstrated leadership abilities; a Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing or a closely related field, Master's degree preferred; 6 to 9 years of progressively responsible experience in economic development and marketing, preferably in a municipal setting; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
