Description:
A progressive city government, along the beautiful Elizabeth River, is seeking an innovative, dynamic and forward thinking leader in the role of Director of Planning to serve a population of approximately 96,000 citizens.
As Director of Planning, the candidate will serve under the general direction of the City Manager and is responsible for formulating departmental policy for broad and specific planning projects, based on planning theories and practices, state legislation, environmental rules and regulations, and other statutory guidelines. In addition to leading and coordinating the activities of the Planning Department, to include the plan review process and comprehensive planning and administrative activities, the Director will analyze and interpret the City code as it relates to planning, development and land use as well as formulate and recommend programs for the physical development of the City. This leadership role also involves consulting with other agencies, state and federal government; making presentations before various boards, commissions, developers, civic groups, businesses, planning agencies and/or other groups as appropriate on the City’s planning policies, codes and current developments; providing staff support to the City’s Planning Commission; and researching and reviewing advanced planning theories and practices related to development issues and policies.

Education/Experience:
Requires an excellent communicator, effective decision maker, strategic thinker, and the ability to effect positive change and provide direction in the forward progress of planning activities for the City, and must have demonstrated leadership abilities; a Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration or a closely related field; Master’s degree is preferred; and 6 to 9 years of progressively responsible experience in urban planning at the local government level; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
