Smoke Detector
Installation Program

In spite of all our preparations and precautions, fire can still strike our homes.
A few moments of inattention while cooking, electrical problems or a simple lightning strike can start a fire.
We all work hard to prevent fires when we can, but it remains critical to prepare for the
worst. Have and practice a home escape plan. Teach your children to leave the house and call 9-1-1.
Have and practice how and when to properly use fire extinguishers for small fires. And finally,
make sure that you have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home.
The U.S. Fire Administration recommends having a smoke detector on every level of your house, and if possible, in each bedroom. We also strongly encourage
installation of carbon monoxide detectors.
Remember that smoke detectors, while very
reliable, can malfunction. It is important to test your
detectors monthly and change the batteries
twice per year (when we change to and from Daylight
Savings Time).
Your fire department believes that smoke
detectors are so important to your safety that we will provide
and install them for you if you cannot afford to purchase them.
Just fill out the contact form below and a fire official will
contact you to make arrangements to install your detectors.
If you purchase your own smoke or carbon
monoxide detectors and you would like the fire department to
advise you on where to place them or to assist you in installing
them, again, please fill out the contact form below.
Portsmouth Fire, Rescue and Emergency
Services also accepts donations of new, UL listed smoke
detectors in the original packaging. If you, your business, or
your charitable organization would like to donate smoke
detectors for this program, please fill out the contact form
below. Your generosity and support is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your attention to this very
important matter. We look forward to assisting you in making
your homes as safe as they can possibly be!
