The Portsmouth Fire Department was
organized in 1830. Our department has been a leader in modern fire
suppression techniques, fire prevention, and education. We maintain a
force of 242 paid personnel who respond to an estimated
17,000 calls for service per year. Our highly trained and dedicated professional firefighters
and paramedics are able to deliver fire protection and/or advanced
medical care to the scene of an emergency, in most cases within five
minutes of being dispatched.
Our department
provides a wide range of comprehensive emergency services that
include Fire Suppression,
Emergency Medical Services
(Advanced Life Support),
Hazardous Materials emergency response and
mitigation,
Technical Rescue,
Marine Incident response,
Emergency Disaster Planning and Management,
Fire Prevention
and Arson Investigation
as well
as public Fire and EMS education.
Resources to handle emergency responses are housed in
eight Fire Stations
strategically located
throughout the city to respond quickly to calls for assistance, 24
hours a day,
365 days a year. These
