In January of 2005 the position of Fire Chief
was vacated creating a need for an experienced and strong leader to fill
the position and head up the department until a permanent replacement
could be appointed.
The city leaders asked Deputy Chief Newell Whitehead to step in and serve
as the Fire Chief in the interim. On January 10, 2005 Chief Whitehead
officially began serving as the Interim Fire Chief. On July 15, 2005 City
Manager James B. Oliver Jr. appointed Chief Newell Whitehead to the
position of Fire Chief.
Chief Whitehead's career with the department began in April of 1965.
During his tenure he has served in every rank; from firefighter to Chief
of the Department, including 20 years in the position of Fire Captain. He
has also served on every company in the department at some point in his
career. With his background he brings a wealth and depth of experience to
the position of Fire Chief. He is without question up to the task of
carrying on the tradition of committed and dedicated professional service
that the citizens of Portsmouth have always enjoyed. |
