Cradock
The Cradock Historic District, a World War
I government constructed, planned housing development, is located
along the George Washington Highway Corridor, a historic “gateway”
into Portsmouth from the South. Cradock’s streets are laid
out in the shape of an anchor, the focal point being Afton Square.
This neighborhood has a strong identity and is a self-contained
community that includes recreational, commercial/retail space, and
schools. In early 2001, Cradock was officially added as a focus
area in the Vision 2005 plan. The newly formed committee will
support revitalization efforts already in progress and begin implementing
a retail strategy for Afton Square suggested in a recent study completed
by H. Blount Hunter. |
