When You Meet A Disabled Person
The Mayor's Committee for Persons with
Disabilities serves at the pleasure of the Mayor on matters
concerning persons with disabilities in the City of Portsmouth.
The Committee was formed in 1977 to give citizens with
disabilities in Portsmouth the opportunity to be involved in the
decision making process that affects them.
The Mayor's Committee for Persons with Disabilities
provides a liaison between Portsmouth citizens with
disabilities and the Portsmouth City Government. Under
leadership of the Mayor and with the coordination of Portsmouth
City Staff, committee members plan and implement various
programs and projects to improve the quality of life for people
with disabilities.
The committee and its members work toward the purpose of
advising and informing the public and private sectors of the
problems facing persons with disabilities in matters of
employment, housing, travel, education and use of facilities
that are open to the public. Functions of the committee include
helping persons with disabilities connect with organizations and
agencies that can supply the necessary resources to promote the
enhancement of their quality of life.
This committee's success has made it a model for Mayor's
