The Department of Public Utilities is a self-supporting public service organization founded in 1879.
The Department is responsible for treating drinking water and maintaining the lines that deliver the water to Portsmouth and certain areas of Suffolk and Chesapeake.
Public Utilities also maintains the sanitary sewer lines and sewage pumping stations which carry wastewater away from your home or business.

The City of Portsmouth Department of Public Utilities will be performing a Unidirectional Flushing Program starting on Monday, March 20, 2017 and continuing through a TBA date, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

NOTICE OF CREDIT/DEBIT FEE
Beginning November 1, 2017, a service fee will be charged when you utilize your credit/debit card or electronic check to pay for your utility bill. This fee is charged and collected by a third party provider. The City of Portsmouth does not receive any portion of the fee that is charged.
The Department of Public Utilities’ Annual Water Quality Report is Available
The Department of Public Utilities announces that the 2015 Consumer Confidence Report, which was released on July 1st, is available for water customers to view via the following link:
This report, also referred to as the Annual Water Quality Report, has important information for consumers about the quality of our drinking water. Once again, Public Utilities is proud to present it as it covers all drinking water testing performed between January 1st and December 31st in 2015.
