| Mosquito Activity (Scale from 0 to 5) |
- The city received an average of 0.75 inches of rain last week.
Mosquito numbers are still expected to increase due to rainfall from
the past two weeks.
- The mosquito activity has increased to a 3. The mosquito
activity increased because of a horse testing positive for West Nile
Virus in Suffolk and the increase in adult mosquito populations
caused by tropical storm Ernesto.
|
| Surveillance |
- 9 CDC style light traps were set this week, a total of 103
mosquitoes were caught, for an average of 12 per trap. Trap counts
decreased slightly from last week most likely due to the high winds
and cool temperatures. Trap will increase significantly next week.
- 7 Gravid style traps were set this week, a total of 30
mosquitoes were caught, for an average of 5 per trap. Gravid trap
counts were down slightly from last week.
- Larval surveillance from last week’s treatments showed much
success in areas that were treated early last week. Crews are
continuing to monitor all standing water for larvae.
|
| Service Requests |
- We received 2 complaint calls this week. Complaint calls win
increase next week.
|
| Control Efforts |
- Crews are continuing to treat standing water throughout the
city.
- Truck fogging has been impossible this week due to inclement
weather conditions. Truck fogging city wide will begin as weather
permits later this week.
|
| Mosquito Habitat Control |
- Army Corps and the City coordinated efforts and had an aerial
contractor herbicide approximately 70 acres of densely vegetated
areas on Corps and City property in Churchland on Sept. 9, 2006.
- This was a continuation of similar, successful operations
carried out last fall.
- The removal of this dense vegetation will further reduce
mosquito breeding habitats.
