| Mosquito Activity (Scale from 0 to 5) |
- We received 4.54 inches of rain from Alberto this week.
- Mosquito activity is a 2 for most of the city. There are still
some problem areas on the margins of the city, but mosquito numbers
are low in the city interior.
- Heavy rains this week will likely lead to higher mosquito
numbers in the next week. Residents must be vigilant in dumping any
collected water on their property to prevent container breeding
mosquitoes.
|
| Surveillance |
- 10 CDC style light traps were set this week, a total of 1,436
mosquitoes were caught, for an average of 144 per trap. Average trap
counts were down slightly this week. Trap counts could increase
substantially next week due to the heavy rain.
|
| Service Requests |
- We have received no complaint calls this week. We anticipate an
increase in complaint calls next week.
|
| Control |
- Crews are currently treating standing water throughout the city
from the heavy rains. This includes roadside ditches, catch basins,
and any other depressions which can hold enough water to breed
mosquitoes.
- Adult spray operations are not scheduled at this time, but may
begin if there is a significant increase in mosquito numbers over
the next week. Mosquito Truck Fogging can only be conducted when
winds are less than 10 miles per hour and there is no rain.
- Mosquito Spraying information is posted on the Mosquito Spray
Hotline at 393-8666.
|
| Reminder To Residents |
- Remember to keep you property free of containers that can
collect water. This includes birdbaths, buckets, children’s toys,
tarps, flower pots, etc. After this heavy rain it is important to
dump out any collected water to prevent container breeding
mosquitoes from being produced in your yard. This must be done
weekly.
- Also remember to wear insect repellant. This is not only
effective for mosquitoes, but also for gnats, ticks, and biting
flies, all of which can be troublesome this time of year. Any
product that contains DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus
are effective and are EPA and CDC approved.
