Mosquito Activity (Scale from 0 to 5)
- Trap counts decreased this week but complaint calls increased.
Mosquito activity was raised to a (3) for this week. Some salt marsh
mosquitoes in Churchland and Asian tiger mosquitoes citywide caused an
increase in the mosquito activity.
Surveillance
- 9 CDC style light traps were set this week, a total of 413
mosquitoes were caught, for an average of 46 per trap. Trap counts
decreased this week.
- 7 Gravid traps were set this week, a total of 158 mosquitoes were
caught, for an average of 23 per trap. Gravid trap counts remained about
the same this week. To date no mosquitoes have tested positive for West
Nile Virus in the City of Portsmouth.
Service Requests
- We received 15 complaint calls about mosquitoes this week. Most
residents calling this week were having problems with Asian tiger
mosquitoes.
Control
- Mosquito truck fogging has been completed in most of the city;
remaining areas should be sprayed this evening (weather permitting).
These efforts will only provide temporary relief from adult mosquitoes.
- Citizens are not doing their part to minimize mosquito breeding.
Citizens must constantly check for and remove items (birdbaths, buckets,
cans, flower pots, rain gutters, corrugated drains, etc.) holding water
on their properties. The only want to eliminate these mosquitoes is to
eliminate the water.
