Mosquito Activity (Scale from 0 to 5)

  • Trap counts increased this week, but complaint calls remain low. Mosquito activity remains at a (2) for this week.

Surveillance

  • 9 CDC style light traps were set this week, a total of 735 mosquitoes were caught, for an average of 82 per trap. Trap counts increased from last week; the bulk of the increase was from mosquitoes that only feed on birds.
  • 7 Gravid traps were set this week, a total of 393 mosquitoes were caught, for an average of 57 per trap. Gravid trap counts increased from last week. To date no mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile Virus in the City of Portsmouth.

Service Requests

  • We received 4 complaint calls about mosquitoes this week.

Control

  • There was some rainfall last weekend and this week, and mosquito numbers could rise due to any standing water from the rain.
  • Mosquito control crews are continuing to seek out and treat any standing water from this week’s rainfall, many areas are drying up.
  • Truck fogging is scheduled throughout the week and weekend to treat the entire city. The citywide spraying is a direct response to the increased gravid trap counts. For more information on fogging activities call the Mosquito Hotline at 393-8666.

Federal Activities

  • Federal contractor treated potential mosquito breeding areas last week. Larval surveys this week indicate very low mosquito breeding.
  • Army Corps and City are also coordinating efforts to have aerial contractor treat dense vegetation on City and Corps property in Churchland. The elimination of the dense vegetation will help to further reduce the mosquito habitat.
